Welcome to O’Kane’s Pharmacy

Laurence O’Kane opened his first Pharmacy O’Kane’s Chemist in 1985 at High Street Draperstown

In 1989 Laurence also purchased The Cross Pharmacy at 16 The Square and this Pharmacy continued to operate from this site until 2005.

In October 2005 the Cross Pharmacy relocated to Tobermore Road adjacent to the new GP surgery. This Pharmacy was relaunched as “HealthCare Pharmacy”.

In 2012 HealthCare Pharmacy relocated to a purpose built building on the Tobermore Road. The new O’Kanes Chemist won the best local pharmacy Award in Northern Ireland in its inaugural year

O’Kanes Chemist continues to trade at High Street.

The Pharmacy Group have been Northern Ireland Pharmacy award winners in 2002/2004/2010 and 2013 and were finalists in 2008 and 2014.

Repeat Prescriptions

Repeat prescriptions can be issued in 2 different ways:
You order the prescription to be approved by a GP each time you need a refill.
You order the prescription once and a GP approves a series of refills for you. They are sent to the pharmacy automatically, so you do not need to order them each time.

Prescriptions

We dispense NHS and Private Prescriptions.

We have a comprehensive computer system which automatically records and monitors all your medicines. This means that if you always use our Pharmacy for your prescriptions we will have a full history of all your medication, allergies, interactions etc.

We also collect Prescriptions at your request at the GP surgery and have your medication ready for you to collect in-store at a time convenient for you.

We can deliver dispensed prescriptions and all medical supplies to our customers who are infirm or lack mobility due to age, disability or ill health.

Repeat Prescriptions and Collection Service

Free Repeat Prescription Service… Saving you time and inconvenience.

All you have to do is:

Phone our Pharmacy and let us know when your prescription will be ready for collection.

We will collect your prescription and have it ready for you to pick up at your convenience or we can deliver to the home of housebound patients.

We can also order your medicines for you.

If you retain the Right Hand Side of your prescription form and tick the items you require and drop this into the Pharmacy we can order and collect your prescription and have your medication ready for collection. (Please allow 48 hrs for this service).

Minor Ailments

A number of conditions can be treated  in the Pharmacy under this NHS scheme.

You can speak to the Pharmacist without an appointment for advice and treatment for these ailments.

Conditions currently being treated under the scheme are:

Groin Itch
Cold Sores
Oral Thrush
Mouth Ulcers

Opioid Substitution Therapy

Opioid Substitution Therapy involves replacing illicit opioids with a prescribed replacement opioid, such as methadone or buprenorphine.

The psychosocial (talking) element supports people to stabilise on the replacement opioid and to then make positive changes to their lives and recover from their drug use. OST is most commonly used for illicit heroin use so that is the focus of this guidance.

The long-term goal of OST is for the service user to completely stop using illicit opioids. In the shorter term, reduced illicit opioid use can reduce risk. OST is effective in reducing:

  • illicit opioid use
  • drug-related injecting
  • blood-borne virus (BBV) transmission
  • offending
  • premature mortality (early death)

Vaccines - Flu Vaccine Covid Vaccine & Boosters

We offer the flu vaccine, Covid Vaccine & Boosters. Eligible groups can receive a free flu vaccine, as part of the national flu immunisation programme. Department of Health policy recommends that people who are at higher risk of becoming seriously ill with flu get the vaccine as well as those who work with vulnerable people.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a treatment where your healthcare provider applies extreme cold to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue. To create this severe cold, your provider will use a substance like liquid nitrogen or argon gas.

Cryotherapy can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions including: Warts, Veruccas and Skin Tags 

Smoking Cessation

If you are a smoker and would like to quit, our Pharmacists and Stop Smoking Advisors are specially trained to provide expert help and advice on the most appropriate Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) for each individual. We can support you in the initial stages while you are trying to break the smoking habit and help you to stay off cigarettes permanently.

Procedure:

Initial Consultation: This takes around 15 mins and during this time we agree a quit date and give you information on the program including deciding which NRT products would be best for you.

Week 1: Before or on your agreed quit date (may be at initial consultation stage) you will pick up your first weeks supply of NRT.

Week 2-12 You can return to our Pharmacy every week and pick up your FREE supply of NRT.

(Some patients may be successfully quit after Week 10 and are entitled to leave the program at this stage).

Counter Medicines

We carry a wide range range of well-known counter medicines as well as vitamin supplements and tonics.

Our Pharmacists and Staff are highly trained to advise you what is best for you. Also if you always use our Pharmacy for your prescriptions we will have a full range of all your medication, allergies, interactions etc.

Gluten Free Products

Coeliac Disease is a common digestive condition where a person is intolerant (or has an adverse reaction) to the protein gluten. There is no cure for coeliac disease, but switching to a gluten-free diet should help control the symptoms.

We stock a wide range of gluten-free products to help you manage your condition.

Many of these products are available on NHS prescription (for patients who have been diagnosed with coeliac disease by an NHS practitioner) and others may be purchased.

Please ask a member of our staff for a full list of our products and advice on how to get your supply of Gluten Free Products on prescription.

Medicine Management

O’Kane’s Chemist and HealthCare Pharmacy provide a FREE and private consultation to help you understand your medication better.

Our Medicines Management Service will be of particular benefit if you take a number of different medicines on a regular basis.

Our Pharmacist will discuss any queries you have in a relaxed and informal way in a private consultation room within the Pharmacy. (The consultation can also be arranged at the patient’s home for housebound patients).

At the consultation we can discuss:

What medicines you are taking
What each medicine is for
What is the best time of day to take your medicine.
Any side effects you might be experiencing

We can organise and balance your medicines so that they will all run out together. This means that from then on you will be able to order your prescription for your medicines all together at the same time.

Oxygen Therapy / Nebulisers

We supply oxygen equipment as prescribed by your doctor.

This includes oxygen tanks (portable and large size)/head sets/masks/nasal cannulae and tubing.

When you are first prescribed oxygen therapy on the first visit to your home we will set up the equipment and explain to you how to use it; thereafter we deliver large cylinders to patients homes as required.

Your GP may have recommended a nebuliser for breathing problems. These are available to purchase in our Pharmacy and at time of purchase a member of staff will explain to you how to use it.

Prescriptions

Dispose unwanted medicine here.

We run a DUMP (Disposal of Unwanted Medicines) campaign so please return all unwanted medicines to us and we will dispose of them safely.

There is no charge for this service.

Vitamin B12 Injections

Vitamin B12 Injection Service. 
This is an effective way to treat Vitamin B12 deficiency. 
Vitamin B12 provides a range of benefits including reducing tiredness,boosting energy levels and improving your mood. 
Consultation is required prior to treatment.

Ear Piercing Services

Do you offer ear piercing services?

Yes,we offer ear piercing using the Studex 75 System,a  professional piercing system that is safe,gentle and hygienic .

We only use sterilised jewellery that is placed into the instruments totally touch free meaning that the earrings we use are sterile and hypo allergenic . 

Do I need to make an appointment?

Ear piercing service is available in both Pharmacies and though booking an appointment is not always necessary it means we can make sure 

2 members of staff are available to pierce both ears at the same time which makes it an easier experience especially for children. 

The minimum age we pierce from is 3years old with parental consent

Ear micro suction and irrigation

At O’Kanes Clinical Pharmacy we use microsuction and/or irrigation methods to remove ear wax build-up from your ear canal. 

Microsuction is the removal of wax by using a suction device and microscope. 

Irriagtion is the use of lukewarm water which is pulsated into the ear canal to remove excess wax. 

Both methods are of wax removal are comfortable, pain-free and very effective.
